Dorris E. Minter was born April 11,1919 in Adams County, Natchez, Mississippi to Charles and Johanna O'Kelley. She graduated from Booker T. Washington Vocational School and attended Harris-Stowe Teachers College for two years. After graduating from St. Mary's Infirmary School of Nursing in 1944 Dorris worked as a registered professional nurse for more than thirty years.

Her desire was to serve in the Navy during WWII, however her 4ft.11in. stature was too short to enter the service. She married Nelson Minter March 8,1946 and from this union came seven children. Dorris was a superior domestic engineer. You know the type; everything has a place and everything in its place. Her home management skills were the best. At 4-feet 11-inches tall and 86-pounds Dorris didn’t take any stuff. Dorris was a professional and she made time to be a devoted wife and nurturing mother.

She did it all. Dorris had a rose garden that would put the White House’s Garden to shame. We remember those early mornings, having to pick weeds while the ground was still wet from morning dew. She would have fresh roses on the kitchen table, during the blooming season. Dorris loved to shop at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. She dressed neat and sophisticated, with her make-up tastefully done. Don’t forget her matching shoes and purse for every season and occasion.  She was one of the Founders of the professional Nursing Sorority in which she remained active to the date. As cofounder of the Younger Set Inc. and active member of the Vashon High School Alumni, class of 1937, Dorris remained an active participant in the community until her death.

Mrs. Minter was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Dan and Charles. Dorris leaves behind her beloved husband of 55 years Nelson Minter, six daughters, Buena Franklin-Williams, Karen Minter-Hall, Neldia Minter, Saudah Muhammad, Glynis Davis, Lisa Scott, one son, Nelson O'Kelley Minter, daughter-in-law, Vickie, and eleven grandchildren, Jeloni, Jamil, Christina, Michael, Carla, Jason, Jeremy, Nuri, Rabiah, Yusuf, and Kwame, her youngest brother Joseph O'Kelley, his wife, Annette, sister-in-law, Eleanor Abbey, son-in-laws, Clyde Hall and James Davis, six nephews, three nieces, a host of great nieces , nephews, cusins, friends, and her church home, Leonard Baptist, St. Louis, Missouri of which she was a member of 40 plus years who will most certainly miss this near perfect little lady.
