Obituary from February 4, 1992 On January 6, 1921, Vernice Harris was born to the union of John Wesley and Savannah Harris in Little Rock, Arkansas. Vernice and her twin sister Vernon were the oldest of six children. The Harris family moved to St. Louis in 1923 and in 1942, Vernice was united in holy matrimony with Sylvester Anthony Smith. Through this union five children were born: one daughter, Sylnice and four sons; Richard, Eric, Leroy and Leslie. Sylvester preceded his wife in death in 1981. Vernice's saving faith in Christ Jesus led her to become a member of Transfiguration Lutheran Church in 1943, where she remained a member until her death, Wednesday January 30, 1992.a little more than three weeks after her 71st birthday. Vernice Smith was a graduate of Vashon High School in St. Louis and pursued a professional career in nursing. She worked for many years in several St. Louis hospitals, including St. Louis University Hospital where she expired. Vernice, our sister, mother , grandmother, aunt cousin and in-law was dearly loved and made many friends along life's way. Her exceptional caring attitude, generosity, unselfishness and unconditional love deeply touched those who love her. She will be sorely missed. In addition to her five children, Vernice Smith leaves behind her sisters, Vernon, Verceree, Velma and Lena, one brother; John, eight grandchildren, many in-laws, nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. |
